Velocity Motorsports finish 1st & 2nd at Road Atlanta in the Masters Series of the Star Mazda Championship

April 17, 2005 - Braselton, Ga., - Velocity Motorsports returned for the 2nd round of the 2005 Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear at Road Atlanta. Drivers John Pew of North Palm Beach, Fla., Mark Patterson of Bronxville, N.Y. and Phil Saville of Oakbrook IL. were anticipating a high level of competitiveness at this race. The competitive bar at Velocity Motorsports was already beginning to rise with the addition of driver coach Oswaldo Negri. After the first day of testing, one could see that this was not the same team that competed here last fall. “The team has made a lot of progress since our last event here at Road Atlanta. Already after two days of practice, we are two seconds a lap quicker,” said team owner Ken Erb.

The qualifying grid was determined from two qualifying sessions on Friday morning. The Velocity Motorsports drivers were in the first group that went out on a cold and dirty track. Although their times became faster with each lap, time ran out on the session and their positions were set with Pew in 24th, Patterson in 27th and Saville in 28th position. Saturday was race day and the team was welcomed to another day of warm sunny skies in the northern Georgia hills. Despite qualifying past the mid-pack line, the drivers were looking forward to moving through the field.

During the pace lap Mark Patterson had a slight hiccup and went off course resulting in his having to start from the back of the 40 car field. The 30 lap race was going to involve a lot of passing by the Velocity Motorsports team. John Pew was making up ground in the race with several calculated passes. “This was a great race with clean racing from everyone,” stated Pew. Despite Pew’s passing it was the lap times of Phil Saville that caught the attention of the crew. Consistently setting times as quick as his qualifying times, Saville was headed for what looked like a potential top 15 finish. Unfortunately his car developed a mechanical issue that ended his race. “Velocity Motorsports gave me a great car. Unfortunately the car developed a shift cable problem and would get stuck in 4th gear”, said Saville. “Finally the cable gave way. However the team has made progress and we look forward to Mid-Ohio.” Patterson’s race that began from the back was shaping up as he carved his way through the field. In the end it was another 1st and 2nd in the Masters Series for the team. “John and I are aiming to win the Masters Series this year,” exclaimed Patterson. This places John Pew on top of the points in the Masters Series with Mark Patterson in 2nd place. Despite his finish Phil Saville is in 4th place in the Expert Series and looks to make up ground at the next event. In the Star Mazda Championship overall points Pew is in 14th position followed by Patterson in 17th and Saville in 23rd position.
