Velocity Motorsports is Gearing Up for Montreal after Mid-Ohio
Prospect Hill, NC – A week before the 3rd round of the 2005 Star Mazda Championship, Velocity Motorsports tested at the ultra competitive Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. “I was very pleased with the performance of our drivers and team after the test,” stated team owner Ken Erb. Unofficial times saw the Velocity Mazda powered cars in the mid 1:20s. “After the test we had high expectations for the race weekend,” said Erb. “In fact we were looking to break the 1:20 barrier during the race weekend.”
Wet conditions in Friday’s 1st official practice session saw only eleven of the forty-six Formula Mazda entries take to the track. Despite the wet conditions, Phil Saville in the #74 took to the track early that morning to gain more track knowledge. Teammate Mark Patterson used the morning session to test his new Mazda engine before the afternoon session. Master’s Series points leader John Pew was like many who decided to wait for clear skies before taking to the track. By the time the 2nd practice session began at 3:40pm, the skies in central Ohio had cleared. The track had dried and it was back to business for the team; however, this would be their only dry session before the next morning’s qualifying session. After a combined 66 laps of practice between the three drivers, the session was over. Under the guidance of race engineer, Ian MacPherson, and driver coach, Oswaldo Negri, the drivers began to prepare for the morning’s qualifying session.
Qualifying was split between two groups with Saville separated from Pew and Patterson. Both sessions were affected by red flags that limited each driver’s number of “hot” qualifying laps. After the qualifying ended, the Velocity drivers found themselves starting the race in mid-pack with Saville 23rd, Pew 26th and Patterson 27th. The team was optimistic that what they had accomplished the week before at the test they could also achieve during the race. However, the 30 lap race was going to be a long one as early mechanical issues put Patterson and Saville several laps down in the event. A strong effort from Pew was rewarded with another top 20 points scoring position. Despite the mechanical issues, the team is focused on the next race in Montreal. “The team is going to continue to build on the enthusiasm from our previous test at Mid-Ohio,” said Ken Erb. John Pew continues to lead the points in the Masters Series with Patterson in 4th place only one point away from a tie with the 2nd place drivers. Phil Saville is currently in 5th place in the Expert Series points standings.
The Montreal event will be held on the same weekend with the FIA Formula 1 World Championship at the circuit Gilles Villeneuve on June 11th.
