For Immediate Release

March 21 - Sebring, Fla. The 2005 Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear got off to a rocket of a start last week. The Velocity Motorsports team arrived in Florida with high expectations for the new season. Driver’s Mark Patterson of Bronxville, N.Y., Phil Saville of Oakbrook, IL. and John Pew of North Palm Beach, FL. were fresh off a winter filled with testing and were ready to race.

After an unofficial test day on Tuesday the gloves were coming off the following day as the first official practice sessions were to began. What all of the teams did not know was how important the times from Wednesday’s practice sessions were going to be for the race on Friday. When the teams arrived at the track on Thursday they were welcomed with open arms to a south Florida thunderstorm. The teams managed some wet practice that morning in very slippery conditions. Unfortunately the conditions were not safe for qualifying that afternoon. The grid was then set based on the times from Wednesday’s practice sessions.

Unfortunately the Velocity Motorsports team were to start past the mid pack line in 26th, 27th and 30th place. The team knew that they could make up ground but how much in 20 laps with 42 hard-charging drivers on the track with them. Despite battling engine inconsistencies the team were able to pass a combined 29 Formula Mazda’s over the course of 20 race laps. The excellent charge through the field vaulted John Pew to 15th position and in a great position for the Masters Class Championship. Very close in 17th position was Mark Patterson who also is competing in the Masters Class. Expert Class racer Phil Saville was to finish 22nd in the 1st round of the 2005 season.

Follow the Velocity Motorsports team to their next event at Road Atlanta on April 16, 2005. The 1st round event at Sebring will air on SPEED April 24th at 11am eastern.
